8 February 12020
appears to be the day of the Lantern
Festival in China. And it’s Jules Verne’s birthday. It’s also the anniversary
of the Orangeburg Massacre. That happened in 1968 on the South Carolina State
University campus when state highway patrol officers opened fire on students
protesting racial segregation at a local bowling alley. Three people were
killed—one of them a high school kid waiting for his mother to get off work—and
some thirty injured. Officers afterward claimed that they had been fired on and
were merely returning fire when they killed the unarmed civilians, but no
evidence was ever presented for the claim—and no armed protesters were ever
identified.
